Common Homeowners Concerns During Hurricane Season

When news of rough weather starts spreading, homeowners often start to worry about their own property if they live in range of the storm. Here is a list of some common concerns and how you can quell them by getting more information from your independent agent. Flooding from a hurricane

  • “Am I covered?” Some people are unsure of their coverage limits, which can be detrimental if a storm causes damage to an underinsured home. Are you unsure? Call your agent to review your coverage and make any necessary updates so the full replacement cost value of your property is covered.

  • “What about tree removal?” High winds can split or snap trees, causing them to drop on top of your property and cause damage. While come insurers cover tree removal if a tree has fallen on your roof or driveway, other insurers will cover a broader range of tree removal across all areas of your property. Talk to your agent about what type of coverage is included in your policy, along with your insurer’s relationship with local arborists.

  • “What constitutes a flood?” Most people are aware that floods are not covered under a standard homeowners insurance policy. But the definition of a flood can sometimes be a bit fuzzy. For example, many types of storms aren’t associated with flooding, but if one causes groundwater to rise, that is considered a flood and may only be covered if you have separate flood insurance.

  • “Can I rebuild elsewhere?” In the event of a total loss, some homeowners may prefer to rebuild in another location that is less likely to sustain similar damage. Ask your agent if your insurer offers cash settlements up to policy limits that you can use to rebuild anywhere.
